If you take your child on a trip, keep routines as similar as possible by eating and sleeping in the same way, at around the same times as normal. Travel takes its toll on young children, particularly infants. Having their normal rituals in place makes the new space seem less scary and more relaxing, which will help everyone get to sleep.

Children in the preschool years do not handle transitions well. Abruptly switching activities can lead to melt downs for young kids who need time to transition between tasks.

It is critical that you have personal time, free of your children. Get a trusted family member or friend to care for you kids so you can enjoy your time without having to worry about them. Parents that do not get personal or adult time away from children have higher levels of stress that magnify throughout the home.

No matter the age of a child, if they walk to school, it is important to be wearing reflective materials. These should be on clothes or backpacks for best visibility. You can find reflective material that can easily be applied with Velcro strips to any surface. That way, your kids will be easily spotted by motorists and crosswalk attendants during darker parts of the day.

Don’t smoke in a home where your kids are living. You should even think about completely quitting smoking. The dangers of inhaling secondhand smoke are the same as those of smoking. When children inhale second-hand cigarette smoke, they are more apt to develop medical problem, such as pneumonia or asthma.

If your baby is cutting a painful tooth, fill a mesh teether with carrots, cucumbers or pickles. There are many methods of toothache relief, but if someone has a flavor your child will be more likely to chew on it. Your child will have more relief from teething pains as they continue to use this teether.

If you have adopted a child, make sure you let your child know when they ask questions. Many children that are adopted become curious about their birth family. When they have questions about this, they will expect you to provide them with some answers. Tell them the truth about the family that they were born to; if you do not, they will be angry when they discover your lie.

Learn about the various stages of maturity and milestones before your children start living them. You should always strive to be a good parent, even when your children are fully grown.
